Renovating an Ageing Family Home

Instead of renovating the entire property, the project concentrated on the areas that would make the greatest practical difference: the kitchen, ground-floor bedroom, bathroom, utility area, external spaces and supporting building services.

Before renovation, the existing frontage and ground-floor spaces no longer fully supported the family's changing daily needs.

The upper floor was retained largely in its existing condition, with the rooms continuing to serve as guest rooms, children’s rooms and storage areas.

A Practical Roofing Solution

An earlier proposal considered a reinforced-concrete roof over part of the extended area.

Following technical and budget evaluation, the roofing system was revised to a steel-framed structure with PU metal-deck roofing and C-channel fascia detailing.

This solution helped reduce construction time and structural loading while maintaining a clean external appearance.

A lightweight steel-framed roofing system was adopted to reduce structural loading and construction time for the extended area.

The owner was informed that this lightweight roofing system was not intended to directly support a future upper-floor extension. Any future vertical extension would require a separate structural design and supporting structure.

This allowed the family to make an informed decision based on its present priorities, budget and long-term expectations.

The completed kitchen was designed as a practical everyday workspace with improved storage and preparation areas.
