Expanding an existing kindergarten is not simply a matter of creating more space.
The new environment needs to feel connected to what already exists, while responding to a different floor plate, existing building conditions, operational requirements and a realistic construction budget.
For this kindergarten expansion and renovation at KL Trillion, Kuala Lumpur, AW Builders Malaysia was engaged to develop the project from the early planning stage through design development, technical coordination and interior fit-out.
The objective was to transform an existing commercial unit into a warm, practical and child-friendly learning environment — while maintaining a visual relationship with the existing kindergarten next door.
Understanding the Existing Environment
Before developing the new space, we first studied the existing kindergarten.
Rather than immediately introducing an entirely new design language, we observed how the existing environment used colour, furniture, circulation and activity areas to create a space that felt comfortable and familiar to young children.

At the same time, the expansion unit presented a very different starting point.
The original commercial space was relatively plain and required substantial planning to accommodate the intended kindergarten functions, internal services and circulation.

This became the foundation of the design process:
How could we retain the familiar character of the existing kindergarten while creating a better-planned environment specifically for the new unit?
Space Planning Before Styling
The project began with several rounds of space-planning studies.
Different configurations were explored to understand how the available floor area could best support learning spaces, circulation, activity zones, storage and supporting facilities.

Instead of treating the floor plan as a fixed arrangement from the beginning, the layout evolved through discussion and refinement.
Each iteration helped us understand the relationship between usable space, movement and the practical requirements of operating a kindergarten within a commercial building.
Eventually, a final planning direction was established that provided the framework for the architectural and interior design development.
Designing for Children Without Overdesigning the Space
Once the layout was established, the focus shifted towards creating an environment that felt playful without becoming visually overwhelming.
Several design principles guided the project.
Colour was introduced carefully rather than applied indiscriminately throughout the interior. Soft neutral walls and timber-look flooring formed the main visual base, while selected areas of blue created a more imaginative atmosphere.

Natural daylight was also treated as an important part of the interior.
The unit's large existing glazing allowed significant daylight into the space, so the planning was developed to benefit from this existing building feature rather than blocking it unnecessarily.
Where appropriate, softer and curved architectural edges were introduced to reduce the rigid appearance typically associated with commercial interiors.
Bringing the Sky Indoors
One of the main design ideas was the treatment of the exposed ceiling.
Instead of installing a conventional suspended ceiling throughout the space, selected areas retained an open-ceiling approach.

The exposed soffit and services were painted in a soft sky-blue tone, creating the visual impression of an indoor sky while simultaneously preserving ceiling height.
Cloud-inspired pendant lights were then introduced underneath the blue ceiling.
Together, these elements created a simple but recognisable visual identity for the learning environment without requiring excessive decorative construction.
The concept also worked particularly well with the natural daylight entering through the surrounding glazing.
A Central Space for Sensory Play
Another important element of the planning was the introduction of a central grass-carpet activity area.
Rather than covering the entire kindergarten with one flooring material, the grass-textured surface helped define a dedicated sensory and activity zone within the larger interior.

The contrast between warm timber-look flooring, soft walls, blue overhead elements and the green activity surface created different spatial experiences while maintaining a coherent overall environment.
This allowed the interior itself to contribute to how different areas could be understood and used.
Designing Within a Realistic Budget
One of the biggest challenges was balancing the original design aspirations against a relatively tight initial project allowance.
Several ideas were explored during the design stage, including additional feature elements and more extensive integrated storage.
However, as the project developed, the design was progressively reviewed to determine which elements contributed most strongly to the overall environment and which could be simplified.
A proposed feature tree element, for example, was eventually omitted.
Part of the originally proposed integrated storage solution was also replaced with a more economical modular cabinetry approach, while selected pantry and washroom cabinetry remained custom-built where site-specific fabrication was more important.

This process was not simply about removing items.
It was an exercise in value engineering — protecting the elements that defined the design while simplifying areas where alternative solutions could achieve the required function at a more practical cost.
From Interior Concept to Technical Design
A kindergarten interior cannot be developed purely through visual design.
Once the architectural direction had been established, AW Builders Malaysia developed the project into a coordinated technical package covering the different components required for construction.
This included space and furniture planning, floor finishes, reflected ceiling coordination, lighting, power requirements, internal piping, air-conditioning, fire-fighting coordination, cabinetry detailing and electrical distribution planning.

The purpose of this stage was to ensure that architectural intent and building services could coexist within the same space.
This was particularly important because the open-ceiling concept intentionally exposed portions of the services that would normally be concealed.
Mechanical, electrical and fire-protection elements therefore had to be considered as part of the overall interior rather than treated as an afterthought.
Construction & Interior Fit-Out
With the design and technical requirements established, the project progressed into site implementation.
The existing commercial unit was gradually transformed through partitioning works, electrical and mechanical services, ceiling and painting works, floor finishes, doors, glazing interfaces, cabinetry and other interior components.
Throughout construction, coordination between trades was essential.

Services had to follow the intended planning while remaining compatible with the existing building infrastructure. Finishes and architectural details also needed to remain consistent with the design developed during the earlier stages.
As construction progressed, the original drawings became a working framework for resolving actual site conditions.
The Completed Learning Environment
The completed interior is intentionally simple.
Warm timber-look flooring creates a comfortable visual foundation, while light-coloured walls help maximise the natural brightness of the unit.
Above, the sky-blue exposed ceiling and cloud-inspired lighting introduce a playful character without dominating the interior.

Curved architectural details soften selected transitions, while the large existing windows allow the city and daylight to remain visually connected to the learning environment.
Storage and supporting facilities are integrated where required, and the overall planning provides a flexible base that can later be populated with children's furniture, teaching materials and activity equipment.

Most importantly, the completed space still carries the core ideas established during the earliest design stage — despite the project undergoing several rounds of planning, technical coordination and value engineering before construction.

Good interior design is not only about producing an attractive rendering.
